Devon Green Lanes

The green lanes of Devon cast an indefinable spell: they are deep, divided by tall hedges, sometimes difficult to find, very often muddy if not actually waterlogged, and of course, they crisscross an exceptionally beautiful county in the South West of England. Usually wide enough for a horse and cart, but no wider, and created hundreds of years ago, often for trading routes, but not really celebrated these days in the the way the coast and the moors are celebrated in Devon. I struggle to think of any other landscape feature I’d rather find myself in.
