Leeden Tor is a very fine viewpoint

A few weeks ago, the last day I saw snow on the moor, I re-visited Black Tor (the one near Princetown, to save confusion). You may have read the blog I posted from that day, but if not, look down the page a little to the ‘Logan Stones’ piece! When I returned to the car after Black Tor, I was still not quite done with the day’s adventures and crossed the road to stride up to Leeden Tor, somewhere I hadn’t climbed before. I’d always assumed the view from the top of there would be similar to that from the little car parks that serve Leather Tor further up the hill. I was right in one way and wrong in another: Leeden Tor is that bit closer and gives uninterrupted views across to some of the big Western tors. I’ve uploaded an extra-large version of this panorama so you can view some of the detail in this rather stormy early-afternoon light. You can see Brentor at the far left, Great Mis Tor at the far right, in the sunshine, and in between many others including the Staples, Roos Tor, Kings Tor, Vixen Tor – even the Merrivale Quarry is visible from here. A lesson was learned, much as I learned it in the Lake District many years ago: some of the minor, mostly overlooked and under-visited hills have the best views.
